MARTHE LAZARUS
Marthe Lazarus is an artist and photographer whose work explores the unstable relationships between memory, images and lived experience.
Her practice draws on personal and found images, archives, self-portraits, staged photographs, images collected online and fragments of everyday life. She gathers, shifts, layers and transforms them to create narratives in which intimate experience meets collective history.
For Marthe Lazarus, photography is less a means of recording reality than a space for transformation. Her images question what memory preserves, distorts or invents, and the ways in which images themselves participate in its construction.
Her work takes multiple forms — photographs, sequences, collages, photo-films and artist’s books — with montage, repetition and the circulation of images at the heart of her practice. Different temporalities meet and overlap, creating connections between personal history and collective memory.
Her work explores questions of memory, inheritance, identity, disappearance and representation.
